Make it With Wool Contest joins FAF

The North Dakota Make It With Wool Contest will be held in conjunction with the Fiber Arts Festival on August 11, 2012. The objectives of the contest are

To promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns.
To encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns.
To recognize creative skills.
To develop life skills, including: being responsible for one’s self, being a good sport, accepting judge’s decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity.

If you forgot to buy your Fiber Arts Festival t-shirt at the festival, it’s not too late. A limited number of shirts are available at the Fargo Park District cultural activities office, located in the Robert D. Johnson Building,1104 2nd Ave. S, Fargo.

Call 701-499-7788 to check on sizes in stock. There should be Youth LARGE through Adult LARGE available.

Dates announced for 2012

Mark your calendars now for the second weekend in August! Remind your friends and family not to get married, have babies or schedule the family reunion on August 11 and 12, 2012.

Same lovely location, improved weather. (well, maybe. . .)

Registration forms for 2012 vendors are now available, just go to the PARTICIPATE page here.

We always need more demonstrators. Ask anyone who does it-they have a great time! This year we’ll provide free instruction in some techniques for our volunteers–more info soon on the PARTICIPATE page.

patchwork tent

A patchwork tent was displayed for the first time at the 2011 festival. It’s made of 2 painter’s drop cloths, some poles, ropes and tent stakes.

Here is the “naked” tent. It is now lined completely with quilt tops, most from the 1940′s. One was donated by Julie Richardson, 2 small ones were made by Kim Baird, the remainder are from Virginia Carman Dambach’s grandmother, who made a zillion quilts during her long life on a hill farm in West Virginia.

the design is based on Bedouin tents from north Africa

Slip off your shoes and come on in!

My inspiration was the beautiful tents once used on military campaigns by the Ottoman Turks.

If you feel like putting some knitting up in a tree, or on a bench or pole, etc., please feel free to do it at Rheault Farm.

Just keep it soft and safe, and we’ll be glad to have your contribution. It will be good advertising for the Festival.

Rheault Farm is at 2902 25th St. S in Fargo. The park is open until 4 every day. Park in the lot to the south, and bring your own ladder.

: 2 light poles have granny squares, but there are plenty left to decorate!

Sheep to Shawl

Guidelines

Teams will spin yarn or thread and weave a shawl in the time allowed.
The woven shawl as it comes off the loom will be 22” by 70” (not including fringe)

Looms to be 4 harness or less, pre-warped at no less than 8 ends per inch
The spun weft thread can not be any thicker than 3 times the warp thread.

Any woven design or color may be used

Any type of fiber may be used in the shawl, but as this is called a sheep to shawl it is hopeful that wool be the primary fiber used.

Teams to consist of maximum of 5 members.
1 weaver
3 spinners
1 gopher as it is called: this member’s job is to interact with the public, answering questions so others can work with little interruptions. She or he is the one who will also run any errands that are needed.

Team members may rotate positions at any time during the day. All team members may work on the fringe.

Each team will supply their own fibers and equipment – spinning wheels, looms, bobbins, bobbin winder etc.

Teams should be set up and ready to start at 11 am, and finished by 4 pm.

(grounds open at 9 am)

Shawls finished by 4 pm will be displayed Sunday for a Public Popularity Vote.

There will be no scheduled breaks, try to have team members rotate their breaks so someone is in the area at all times.

There will be a maximum of 4 teams for this event.
